Work is super stressful right now and I could use some comfort food ideas. Especially since mine tend to involve carbs but I think carbs are making me bloat in a way they didn’t when I was 20. (Aside: getting older sucks.) Never been a fan of ice cream either.
Mine are typically mashed potatoes, or potatoes generally, and plain bean and rice burritos, cheese optional. My husband thinks I’m crazy because it’s all so plain but when I’m sick or stressed and my stomach is upset, that’s what I want.
Peanut butter. Just peanut butter. Normally I’ll have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch but when I’m stressed I might forget the jelly and bread
It’s probably a step up that it’s no longer all carbs or all sweets. It’s also used to be Kraft Mac and cheese, but I can no longer go back from real Mac and cheese
Pad Thai and Panang Curry Chicken, ★★★.
Pizza, it’s always pizza.
Maybe for dinner tonight…
Pizza is unfortunatly my go to depression food 😅
Well stop eating it if it makes you depressed
Just had one
Collard greens and bacon.
This is a perfect recipe, but I just fry up some bacon instead of using a turkey leg (though I’m sure that would be great too).
Tangerines, sweet, easy to peel, healthy and you dont have to cook.
The poor things
Law of the jungle. Bad luck for them they’re so delicious.
I normally love Mac N Cheese but since you’re wanting to cut carbs my second favorite is jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon, best on the grill but good in the oven too.
Oooh heartburn be damned, that does sound good!
Homemade pasta sauce made from ground beef and pork, in the style of a Bolognese / Pörkölt crossover.
So haram
Eggy in a basket. Many may know of it from V For Vendetta, and as much as I’d like to show off: I saw it on there first as well (all those years ago), but my gosh is it satisfying!
Butter one side of thick-sliced bread, use a small glass to cut a hole in the middle, plop some butter into a pan, put the un-buttered side down and crack an egg into the middle, and once it’s cooked enough flip it for a bit and then serve.
It takes practise to get the timing, of when to flip, right but once you do it’s just buttery and eggy and definitely comforts me well.Any vegetable i like fried in a pan, deglazed with any liquid (wine, broth, cream, water), some things to thicken the sauce (cheese, starch, flour), with a bit of any seasoning, and this goes on either pasta, rice or couscous. Very bad for the carbs part though, i admit.
Another option i recently found is kidney beans mashed with a fork, with some onions/garlic/green stuff in tiny pieces, maybe a bit of flour/starch and some seasoning (spices, soy sauce), fried in a layer of oil in a pan, makes very good patties that we really enjoy.
My partner’s go to is Chicken and Biscut crackers with Canned Cheese
I like the dollar cheeseburgers from McDonald’s that aren’t $1 anymore.
Canned Cheese
That’s a thing? I didn’t know that was a thing. What’s it taste like?
Cheezwhiz. It’s cheese but not cheese in all the wrong but oh so right ways.
It tastes closest to American cheese/craft singles, but it’s more of a liquid than a solid.
Leaning tower of cheesa
Quarter pounder with cheese
I chop up a potato and throw it in a bowl with water and microwave it for 10 min. Then, I fry them in a pan with either butter or olive oil. When they’re almost done, I crack open 2 eggs on top and mix it all together.
Top with ketchup. So good.
Poutine, there’s this place near me that sells 'em with a lot of smoked meat on it. Or grilled cheese + tomato soup if I’ve got the ingredients.
Canada? As if my American ass wasn’t envious enough of you Canadians!
We have chili cheese fries
This is such a weird food item. I never heard of it until I visited Iran
Grilled chicken and a bunch of vegetables (shredded carrots, cabbage, pickled onions, etc) on fresh made naan smeared with hummus. I like some Nandos Garlic sauce on it as well
How do you make your naan bread? I’ve been making a quick and easy one with yogurt, flour and baking soda, and they’re good, but not quite as good as ‘real’ ones.
I use this recipe, myself. Ive had good results
https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/naan-recipe
I mix all the dry ingredients together thoroughly (otherwise the yeast clumps with the butter/ghee badly) before mixing the whole dough, and use the hottest water from my tap.
Does naan not mean “bread”?
I believe the root of the word means ‘bread’ etymologically. But even in Hindi, नान means a flatbread that looks very like what English speakers would mean by naan, a flat bread, ideally baked in a tandoor.
My go to is always classic Mince and Tatties. My grandpa made it most nights when I was growing up and I find it very calming and satisfying.
Nice and plain as well so it might work for you
Mince and tatties? Whereabouts in Scotland are you from, pal?
Highlands ✌️
I grew up in the Borders, so lowlander! Now living in England and occassionally ordering meat pies and tattie scones through the post!
What’s tatties, precious?
Potatoes
Fresh bread! The warm soft fluffy kind that I can gobble down in seconds. Ice cream is nice, but my lactose intolerance hates it lmfao
I’m in the USA and my local grocer makes bagettues throughout the day. It’s amazing to get a warm loaf fresh out of the oven at 7pm.
I know the local grocery store only makes bread in the mornings, so fresh fluffy bread at night is on me to make, alas!
