I have no answer for you. Maybe the Bajoran religion itself was just stupid.
I always enjoyed how the few encounters shown with The Prophets/Wormhole aliens were nearly completely divorced from the Bajoran religion and the teachings of the Kai. It was a nice commentary on how religious leaders can pervert a religion to their own agenda.
