Tuta is having a birthday sale, putting their highest Legend tier at the same price as their second-highest Revolutionary tier, and I’m wondering two things:

  • Is this a good deal for 36€ per year?
  • Is this a deal that comes around every year, or is this a rare sale?

I use addy.io to manage aliases, so the extra addresses are whatever. The custom domains might be nice, since I could potentially(?) use that with Addy. I’ve been pretty judicious with my free 1GB of space, but having 500GB would be more than comfortable (besides being overkill).

I’m not really interested in getting into self-hosting right now, but I might in the future, so I’m also curious how y’all who self-host email feel about a deal like this. Comparable to the cost of self-hosting? Similar features?

      Kinda my thought, too. Was using Google for years and never hit the 15GB cap. Seems like overkill.

        They had a premium tier before, that was just 1€ a month. I cancelled it last year. If you are open to trying other services, I recommend Posteo. They are a paid service, but it only costs 1€ a month. They also support IMAP and POP3 OOTB, unlike Tutanota.

          Side note, by going to a service with IMAP and POP3 your emails will be much less secure. One of the benefits to tuta is the high level of privacy and security, and that is achieved through the encryption done with the apps you are forced use, and IMAP POP3 etc won’t work as a result .

            What they are doing is achieved by both Posteo and Mailbox by encrypting incoming emails at the server with your PGP public key WHILE supporting IMAP/POP3. The email client can then decrypt it with the private key.

            Yes, PGP encryption does lack encrypting some stuff (like the subject), but this also will not be an excuse once email providers and clients start using JMAP, which uses HTTPS.

          They don’t support custom domains, so it’s a no-go for me. I understand why they don’t, but I use my own domain so it’s easier to switch providers.

            So with a custom domain, do you just have your domain and add it to SecureEmail as your address? Then if you want to move, you just cancel the SecureService and add your domain to another service?

              If I understand you correctly, yes.

              I have my domain pointing mail DNS records to Tuta, and I registered that domain w/ Tuta so it’s associated w/ my account. If I switch, I just register the domain w/ another service and point my mail DNS records to that other service. Tuta won’t necessarily know that I’ve switched providers (unless they check my DNS records), they’ll just stop receiving mail. It’s on me to move whatever emails I want to the new service.

              That’s a lot less painful than changing my address, since I would have to go and change my address everywhere. This requires no changes to any services I use or to my contacts.

              I have two domains, so I can move just one if I want.

                Oh, cool. That’s not unlike how I use addy.io. I have aliases for individual services that use the subdomain they gave me, and they forward to my Tuta address. If I want to leave Tuta and go to Mailbox.org (for example), I just have to tell addy.io to forward to that new email.

                Thanks for the explanation! I’ve been thinking about getting my own domain.

    I’m a “Revolutionary” sub, and I bought an annual sub when they had the same price for the “Legendary” tier in Dec. There’s no way I’m going to use the extra features, and I’m worried about forgetting to change the tier later.

    I do have two domains added, one for my primary email and one for junk. I use a few hundred MB storage, with no chance of going over my current 15GB limit in the next few years.

      I signed up for Proton prepaid a while ago and decided the best way to cancel payments was to simply use a masked card with a purchase limit on it. Big mistake. When my paid period ended and a second transaction failed to go through, Proton simply locked my account and all its emails until I prepaid again. I did so, and then I immediately canceled further payments.
