I know this is just thebad.website comic, but I’m genuinely curious (and an idiot) to know what the connection is with generally racist-inclined folk love for saying that everything is common sense. What makes them think in this way?

It’s the backbone of their every argument–no matter what it is, if I ask, “Why do you think x, y, or z is the case?”
It is without a doubt their instant reply, ‘It’s just commonsense!’

They should really add racism to the list of examples, because blaming every problem in the world on that is also a thought-terminating cliché.

Why are black people poorer on average than white ones? — Racism

Okay, why are there more black athletes in many professional sports like basketball or football? Also racism? — No, it’s because they have a higher likelihood of having natural talent for these sports.

See how that works? As soon as you’ve pinned the problem on racism, you’re done investigating. Just like with common sense.

Before you even bother trying to correct this person, keep in mind that they are also so unbelievably stupid that they think ICE is arresting criminals.

I’m just going to address your comment about Black people and sports.

Black people do not have a higher natural talent in sports, for Black youth sports is one of the only ways to achieve success, so they place a higher emphasis on sports. It’s evident because they are only dominant in the sports they have access to.

Pointing out that you harbor racist sentiments is not thought terminating, it’s apparent in your writing.

Okay, so you’re saying racism actually IS the only reason black people are overrepresented in those sports, have I got that right?

Shouldn’t we then maybe implement a diversity quota system in order to give more white and Asian players a chance to compete? Seems kinda unfair to exclude them, don’t you think? Perhaps if more of them had a chance become highly paid sports stars, they’d be less overrepresented in engineering or finance.

Your argument relies on a litany of logical fallacies: straw man, false dilemma, sarcasm as substitute, slippery slope, red herring and on top of that you’re gish galloping and making a bad faith argument.

Wow, EIGHT logical fallacies in only four sentences? That’s gotta be some kind of record…

Now, would you please be so kind as to explain just HOW I managed to commit all of these fallacies in such a short amount of time? Because otherwise, one might accuse you of using those fallacies only as a thought-terminating cliché, and we wouldn’t want that, would we.

A single sentence can contain multiple fallacies. Also it’s 5 logical fallacies, 1 rhetorical technique and 1 that just describes your general attitude. I’m not wasting any more time on you.

Sounds like another thought-terminating cliché if you ask me. How can you know in advance whether your time would be wasted? Do you also have the ability to predict the future? What if we end up having a good time instead, maybe drink a couple beers, get some crazy tattoos as a dare, and you’ll end up naming your firstborn after me?

Because there isn’t a real reason besides idiocy and hate, if they try to rationalize it, it falls apart, they have to face or give away that they’re just hateful idiots. Saying it’s “common sense” is an easy scapegoat to tidy up the truth, even if it’s just for the benefit of their cognitive dissonance.

in addition to the reasons (rationalizations) other commenters have covered, the reason (casuality) that they reuse this particular phrase so much is because it’s commonly used in the media they consume. from limbaugh to rogan it’s always been a staple.

They think that way because that’s as far as their thoughts go. They do not have a deeper reason. They’re just judgemental morons that jump to conclusions to make themselves feel better.

Sheeesh, and ya all wonder why no one listens to the left.

If you know shit about topic, you can only skim the surface. That’s common sense. More police = less crime. More military = less risk of being attacked. More goods = smaller prices. That’s common sense.

What it doesn’t account for is, for example, too much police = more corruption, too much military = expansionist ideas, too many goods = oversaturation and sharp drop in said goods. Because that requires deeper knowledge. Yes, not much deeper, but you need to know these things are in fact factors, and that the problem is more complex than what’s seen at a glance.

Edit: Forgot to answer why it’s overused by racists etc. If you know black do most crime out of all, it’s common sense to want them pacified. If you know drugs are bad and mexicans are known for cartels, it makes sense to not want mexicans which can be smugglers. It all falls apart as soon as you read on it or do anything, but what these people have most of is willful ignorance.

The “common sense” answer is generally broad and vague. It purposefully avoids nuance and reality. “If I want to build a garage on my property, why does the government need to be involved?” That person doesn’t think of the drug dealer doing that to cook meth right next door and possibly blow up the block or the idiot that doesn’t understand how to build a structure and it collapses in the first stiff wind.

    • Depends how u interpret what people say. If someone where to say 13% of the population in the us commit 50% of the crime. Some would interpret that as wow maybe we should target our resources at that 13% to prevent said crime. Then u can have a discussion about if said targeting of resources should be called dei policy or fascist targeting of minorities.

The right would argue “more police = less crime” and the left would argue “something something disadvantage let’s not address the crime problem with police cos that’s racist or fascist”. Common sense would tell us that perhaps cops prevent crime and perhaps targeting those resources at the heigh crime areas would reduce crime. So u tell me what’s the common sense solution here?

BTW that stat about 13% is true according to the FBI (yes it was the same under bidden so it’s not trump fucking with the stats)
