It was coined in Germany in the thirties as a shortened version of the antifaschistisch in Antifaschistisch Aktion, an anti-Nazi organization put together by the German Communist Party. It’s been used as a rallying label for antifascists all over the world ever since, though it has never since then been an actual centralized organization. The term was already well-known in England before the it took off here in the US as consequence of our own fascists obsessing over it (And putting the emphasis on the wrong accent, “Aunt TEE fah” like antiquity instead of “ANT eh fah”, which I’ve lately realized might have been intentional on their part).
