    They care more about peace than justice.

      i’m reminded of something mlk jr wrote, on a related topic:

      I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice;

      That’s a lot of people - they just want things to be quiet and easy for them, and if there’s injustice for others they’ll just have to live with it.

      see the thing though is that “all of this” in the meme is very vague. it could mean a full-on cultural revolution, one where democrats and republicans alike do not exist anymore. I don’t think people are really wanting to go back to the status quo, not really. it’s obviously infinitely better than christofascism, but people want meaningful change. probably a big reason why Kamala Harris was not so popular, even though I voted for her

        That’s exactly what they did in 2021. Biden appointed a Republican, Merrick Garland, as his attorney general. And Garland sat on his ass for two years without bringing any charges. Only when they were shamed into it by House committee investigations did they actually start to move. By then, it was too late. Trump ran out the clock. They prosecuted Trump to appease the base, but they did so late enough that Trump stood no chance of conviction before the election.

      Qualified immunity specifically does not apply in cases where someone’s clearly established civil rights were violated, though the criteria for that is specific. Further, it applies only to civil cases, not criminal cases. It may certainly help them in some instances, but it’s not going to be a blanket shield.

      1 Was a constitutional right violated?

      2 Was the right clearly established at the time of the alleged violation?

      While yes, IANAL, I’m exceptionally doubtful that clearly established constitutional rights aren’t being violated by the behaviors of ICE under Trump, in many, many circumstances.

        Given that what’s happening is absolutely unprecedented, I’m pretty sure that there aren’t any specific court cases dealing with that kind of shit that’s going on right now. Do I WANT all ICE agent to have severe legal consequences for this, if we ever have an election again? Absolutely. But fuck it, I’ll settle for some extrajudicial rendition to the Mariana Trench.

      In 1945 in Germany, the murder rate was about 25 times what it is in current day United States.

      A lot of people who were “just following orders” got justice.
