What’s everyone’s opinion on this? Is it a good or bad thing? It’s good, people can ditch WhatsApp and might be easier to convince people to leave it behind altogether. Bad - I can’t imagine that meta do anything without something being in it for them.
Could this potentially help meta scrape information from other messengers?
Could the likes of signal make it optional for the user, whether or not they want to be able to chat across the different messengers…

Anything Meta touches should be considered suspicious. Especially when it comes to privacy.
Typically systems that communicate with reach other are as secure as the most insecure one. So yeah.
Everything is end to end encrypted. So conpmpromising any servers would mean nothing.
The issue is only if some client apps introduce a back door. Which is way easier to do in closed source apps - like Whatsapp as compared to opensource Signal. So in a sense this would increase security since you can now use more trusted client app…
End to end is just a buzzword when you control both ends.
And now they will not be able to control both ends. Previously it was just a buzzword. They are giving me a chance to control at lease one end. And now I will be able to convince my friends to migrate away from whatsapp… So whatsapp will control no ends of my communications.
Well, maybe. But if it goes tjrough without some “bugs” or simply good features missing, we will see how good the e2e really is
You just disproven your own first point.
If you chat with somebody and they have a client that is closed source and thus can not be trusted - your conversation is not secure, even if your client is open source and trusted and secure.
So interop makes end to end encrypted communication as a whole less secure, not more.

You will only use one client app. The one you trust the most. One opensource, trusted and having its code regularly independently audited - like Signal. So in general this will improve my security.
Even if you account my contacts are using the official whatsapp app, that cannot be trusted since it is not audited by public.
Previously I had to use Whatsapp app to to talk with them. Not the other way around. So if Whatsapp app is backdoored this does not reduce security at all. While it improves convenience by a lot.
But now is way easier for me to convince my contacts to use apps that can be trusted. which will reduce the chance of my communication being backdoored and increase my security.

ah I see where our views split. I just told people what app to find me on and I’d rather call or write mail than use whatsapp for a tidbid of convenience.
So from my pov the interop will reduce security. From your pov it will be at worst equally insecure.

It’s for the same reason they (half-ass) added ActivityPub support. To avoid legal issues.
There’s also the fact that they’ll suddenly have access to a whole bunch more data.
It’s the same reason I don’t recommend Matrix. You can run your own Matrix server but ultimately 90% of Matrix users are on matrix.org, and all your data ends up on their servers anyway.
I really hope this means matrix.org integration and Signal integration will finally allow me to ditch those apps and allow my family to do the same.
My family will never ditch proprietary apps. It’s either me having to have a complicated setup with multiple phones or profiles in grapheneos to talk to them, or being able to use a third-party app I can be ok with having on my main phone. Even if our communication is not private, I’d love to be able to just not have whatsapp installed in any way. That would be good for me.
