Historically when the Whig Party fell a part over slavery they were replaced by the Republican party. Many Whigs became Republican. Lincoln was Whig.

The current GOP’s power basely relies on the Democratic Party being so incapable. A party with focused goals that aren’t just derived or borrowed from the GOP will likely break this inertia, as is so needed.
