I can speak from experience in tech sector how incredibly tiny Shenzen salaries are even today compared to everything else as I get recruitment offers almost every week. 60k/year is basically peak salary you can get as a senior software dev compared to 100-300k in US.

Here one source says avg annual income in Shenzen is 24,000 USD vs for example Denver of 94,157 USD — 4 times higher and that’s Denver not San Francisco which would be the mirror of Shenzen.

There’s no way to verify how other political system would have worked for China. Maybe it would have worked even better? Taiwan for one is richer, stronger and happier than China per capita so does that mean dictatoriship -> democracy is a better system? Do you see the flaw in this attribution logic now? China has been really showing off hard in the past few years, especially on tiktok. Chinese cars are winning and every single person on Tiktok knows about Chongqing. So I don’t think this is as apt as it used to be.

I’d love more cultural exchange with China but it’s really up to Chinese themselves. Literally all west media and apps are blocked in China. So should we converge on a clear propaganda app which is litterally named after the little red book of communist revolution as our “honest cultural exchange” source? The entire idea of “restricting information” to protect investments of investors is fundamentally flawed. There’s no way to do that other than is brute force (what we do right now by just bullying people who do it) and good luck brute forcing billions of free data streams from billions of people, some coming from jurisdictions you have no control over. The critical mass has been reached.

Yeah I doubt it tbh. I loved my time with stackoverflow and it landed me jobs and friends but I’m quite bullish when it comes IT and AI. It’s not replacing devs yet but definitely replacing q&a, debugging tools, code reviews etc already/soon.

I hope we’ll have some open social coding experience like SO but trends seem to point towards more private stuff like coaching, bookcamps, shitty discord servers etc. as that’s the only thing that can be funded sustainably.

Nah Meta is widely regarded as one of the best employers in the world. I’d take 300k/usd year and all of the benefits too. Let’s stop pretending that traditional companies are somehow better so you either don’t work for any corporation or actually work for one that provides incredibly benefits to you so you have the luxury to give back and steer the ship towards good a little bit.

I had 40k points on SO though I no longer contribute. Stackexchange is basically dead because it’s a for-profit with very poor direction and LLMs basically made the entire thing obsolete relative to the monetary growths it needs to be sustainable. It’s one of the biggest tech conglomerates in the world. Tencent invest into literally everything: games, social networks, entertainments, cloud computing, finance, AI, other investments… Tencent owns WeChat, Tencent Cloud, Tencent Healthcare just to name a few and helps CCP with surveilance and censorship through these ownings (tbf they don’t really have a choice, they’re based in China)

100% they are involved in military too so this classification is very much justified.
