Property tax is the mechanism through which the taxes are gathered, but funding is through the province. This is very different than how allocation happens in most states, where schools are directly funded by their catchment area.

Yes and. How most of the US funds their school system is super fucked up. Here in Canada, primary education is paid for by the province, and school funding is based on student enrollment numbers. This translates to much more equal levels of education, regardless of how wealthy a given neighborhood may be. I was shocked to find out that schools are paid for by catchment area taxes in must of the states - it makes the history of redlining so obvious when the is literally a “wing side of the tracks”.

I can pop, or reverse pop my ears at will. Where most people talk about chewing gum to pop their ears on a plane I can push out and suck them in to change the pressure at will. It’s useful to help regulate how much noise gets in (in a small way) too.

I don’t know the Australian constitution or legal structure either, but as vehicle regulations are set by the feds thes states still need to deal with the repercussions. They could do nothing instead, but they have no power to reduce vehicle sizes. A better approach might be to get rid of parking requirements altogether. But, that’s more likely to be political suicide for the elected officials than to spur on a broader anti-car sentiment, especially given the rural nature of the state.

This policy is at the state level and states do not have jurisdiction over vehicle standards. Vehicle standards are regulated by the national government, so this is more of an addressing the symptom of an issue the state has no control over the cause of. That doesn’t mean it’s not ridiculous that garage size regulations are what’s changing, but let’s cast share where it’s due.
