I’ve seen it happen to me personally across multiple Lemmy domains (I’m a moron and don’t care much to have empathy in my writing, and it sets these limp-wrist morbidly obese mods/admins to delete my shit and ban me), and it happens to many people as well.

I mean, we have tried to completely stop, or at least slow, the refinement of crude oil, because there’s so much fucking byproduct that is made from it and is subsequently recycled and converted into plastic. What else can we do with all that fucked up petroleum byproduct besides make it all into some form of usable plastic?

I second this opinion. The federated applications and communities aren’t perfect, but it’s less toxic and better to use in general due to the lack of an all-encompassing algorithm that guides your usage to increase views for ad revenue.
