40 or so trips to the compost and mulching facilities (it would be 15 if I had the longer bed but I also like being able to park so it’s a trade off), about 1500 miles a year towing 8500lbs, usually at least 1 major house project (rebuilding deck this year, garden planters last year), and being the backup family vehicle if my schedule doesn’t match up with the wife and kids needs.

It’d be cheaper (and easier) to have the mulch/compost delivered or to haul it with a trailer and a more reasonably sized vehicle, you probably don’t actually need that boat/camper/whatever you’re hauling 1500 miles, you could rent a flatbed for your 1 major house project a year for a fraction of the maintenance cost of your pickup, and a pickup truck is a pretty shit choice for a family vehicle.

You don’t need a truck that you can’t see over the hood of.

Not to dogpile, but it sounds like your needs could be met a lot more affordably with a trailer that you hook up to a more fuel and space efficient vehicle

That sounds like a camper. I never understood campers, either you want to stay in a building with a real bed and running water wherever you’re going or you want to camp as close to the outdoors as possible sans bugs crawling on you, and campers just give you the worst of both experiences. Again its almost definitely cheaper to just rent a cabin or buy a decent tent to pitch wherever you’re going than to haul a big $10-50k camper around
